Gum-Sticking Destinations, A Virtual Guide

After seeing a post on Likecool about gum stuck to the walls of Post Alley, under Pike Place Market in Seattle, I did a little research and found that the human urge to stick absolutely massive quantities of gum to stuff is not unique to Seattle.

First stop: Post Alley, Seattle.

Next stop: The Gum Tree at Ball State University

Next stop: Bubblegum Alley in San Luis Obispo, CA

Next stop: Penny Tree near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

... and if don't yet have the heebie jeebies yet, there's always the Gum Stuck on Stuff Flickr Pool.

Why Avatar is the 26th biggest movie of all time

When counting the number of actual tickets sold, versus ticket gross (which is misleading due to the inflation of ticket prices) you find a very different blockbuster list than is usually touted by Hollywood. The only recent movie that even makes the top 10 is "Titanic" (1997) followed by "E.T." in 1982 -- illustrating the steep decline in theater-going and the rise of rental and movie purchasing.

  1. "Gone With the Wind" (1939) 202,044,600
  2. "Star Wars" (1977) 178,119,600
  3. "The Sound of Music" (1965) 142,415,400
  4. "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982) 141,854,300
  5. "The Ten Commandments" (1956) 131,000,000
  6. "Titanic" (1997) 128,345,900
  7. "Jaws" (1975) 128,078,800
  8. "Doctor Zhivago" (1965) 124,135,500
  9. "The Exorcist" (1973) 110,568,700
  10. "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937) 109,000,000

New Year's Resolutions Done Right

A few weeks ago while sitting in a waiting room for jury duty I whipped out the iPhone and scrolled through Twitter for a bit. A tweet from @katerockin caught my attention — she was working on a list of 100 things to accomplish in 2010 and mentioned that she only wanted cross-offable items. For someone who has failed (or simply forgotten) dozens of resolutions and who also loves lists, this seemed like a great alternative to the vague get in shape or have more fun resolutions I usually make. I would much rather stop ordering Venti Carmel Choco-Macchiatos with Bacon Whipped Cream from Starbucks and try Irv & Shelly's Fresh Picks. So that's what I did: 100 actionable things to get done in the new year, taped to the closet door. That's one thing every 3.65 days.

By the way, I didn't get picked for jury duty and during lunch I chatted it up with Al Gore while he signed a copy of his new book at Borders. I had just enough time to say "thankyoumrgoreokbye".
